RAWLINGS NCBA DI PRESEASON TOP 20

Well here we go!  Let the chatter begin!  For the first time since 2015, the previous year’s National Champion, Penn State, is not ranked #1 even with earning the vast majority of first-place votes.  Not a huge surprise to see ECU in the top position with the amount of returners coming back in 2019.  They will be a tough team to beat.  Two other teams earned first-place votes in the Rawlings NCBA DI Preseason Top 20, so be sure to check it out!

NORTH ATLANTIC TEAM PREVIEWS

2018 couldn’t have went any better for the Penn State Baseball Club capping off their season with a National Championship that was won in dramatic fashion.   After winning the extremely competitive North Atlantic West Conference, Penn State entered the Regional Tournament as the #1 seed.  In some very hard fought games, Penn State won 3 straight to capture 2nd Regional Championship in a row.  They entered the World Series as the #7 seed and had to face off against the defending National Champions, East Carolina in their opening round game.  After an 8-7 victory over ECU, the Nittany Lions went on to beat Iowa State and Oregon in their next two, which earned them a spot in the National Championship against none other than the Pirates from East Carolina.  Penn State showed how resilient of a bunch they were in the Championship game coming from behind twice late in the game.  Heading into the bottom of the 8th inning, they were down three but put a 3 spot on the board to tie the game up heading into the 9th.  After ECU regained the lead in the 9th by two runs, Penn State walked off in the bottom of the 9th to claim their 2nd ever National Championship.  Will Penn State have what it takes to win the North Atlantic again in 2019?  Check out the North Atlantic Team Previews to find out!

MID-ATLANTIC TEAM PREVIEWS

To say East Carolina is a absolute powerhouse is an understatement.  They have won the Mid-Atlantic Region five years in a row and six of the last eight years.  While the Mid-Atlantic Championship Crown has been one they are used to wearing, the National Championship Crown hasn’t been so easily attainable for the Pirates.  In their first appearance at the World Series in 2011 and winning the National Championship, they had a two year hiatus before returning in 2014.  After disappointing finishes at the World Series in 2014, 2015 and 2016, ECU absolutely dominated the World Series in 2017 behind incredible pitching and defense. In 4 games at the World Series, they only gave up 1-run which helped propel them to their 2nd ever National Championship.  In 2018, the Pirates picked up where they left off winning the Mid-Atlantic once again and entered the World Series as the #2 seed.  After a tough opening round loss to Penn State, they battled through the losers bracket winning 4-games in a row to land themselves in the National Championship against Penn State.  All things pointed to ECU claiming their 3rd National Championship being up 2 runs heading into the bottom of the 9th, but a late rally by Penn State ended their season as National Runners-Up.  Will that heartbreak motivate the Pirates in 2019, or will someone else in the Mid-Atlantic take their spot?  Check out the Mid-Atlantic Team Previews to find out!

NORTHERN PACIFIC TEAM PREVIEWS

In 2018, the University of Oregon represented the Northern Pacific Region at the World Series after a year hiatus.  The Ducks had high expectations coming in as the #1 seed but it certainly didn’t go as expected even though they made it to the final four.  While they were eliminated by the eventual National Champions, Penn State, Oregon does bring quite a bit back in 2019.  Will they be hungry enough to get back to Holly Springs or will another team emerge from the NoPac in 2019?  Check out the Northern Pacific Team Previews to find out!

MID-AMERICA TEAM PREVIEWS

Iowa State won the Mid-America Region in 2018 in dramatic fashion.  They lost their opening round game to Missouri by one run, then battled through the losers bracket.  They eventually faced Colorado State in an elimination game and defeated the Rams by a score of 1-0.  Once in the Championship, they faced Missouri once again needing to beat them twice.  The Cyclones were up to the task and beat Missouri twice, by you guessed it, one run in each of the games to claim the Mid-America Regional Championship.  ISU was a battle tested team that came into the World Series as the #6 seed.  They won their first game but lost the next two to Penn State and ECU respectively.  Will the Cyclones have what it takes to win the very competitive Mid-America in 2019 or will it be someone else’s turn?  You’ll have to check out the Mid-America Team Previews to find out…

SOUTH ATLANTIC TEAM PREVIEWS

What a season for the 2018 South Atlantic Champions, Florida State University.  They battled through a very tough South Conference and eventually won the South Atlantic Regional after defeating their conference rival UCF 11-10 in the championship game.  They came to Holly Springs as the #3 seed but ran into two very good teams and were the first team eliminated from the tournament.  Florida State will certainly be motivated, but the South Atlantic is a tough Region.  Will that motivation be enough to get them back to Holly Springs or will someone else take the South Atlantic crown this year?  Check out the South Atlantic Team Previews to find out.

GULF COAST TEAM PREVIEWS

Texas A&M won the Gulf Coast Championship in 2018.  Coming into the World Series as the #8 seed, not much was expected out of them especially with their opening round match up against the #1 seeded Oregon Ducks.  While they dropped their first game 2-1, they showed that they belonged but ended up going two and out.  Will that motivate the Aggies to get back to Holly Springs, or will another Gulf Coast Team take their spot?  Read the Gulf Coast Team Previews your opinion!

SOUTHERN PACIFIC TEAM PREVIEWS

Grand Canyon University was king of the mountain in the SoPac in 2018.  At the World Series, the newcomers turned heads placing in the final four but ultimately fell short of their goal.  Will 2019 be the year for Grand Canyon?  Will they win Regional’s and make it back to Holly Springs to finish their business, or will someone else dethrone the Lopes and win the SoPac Title in 2019?  Check out the Southern Pacific Team Previews to find out!

The University of Wisconsin won the Great Lakes Region in 2018 and represented the Great Lakes at the World Series in Holly Springs.   After getting a taste but ultimately going 1-2 at the World Series, will they have the hunger to get back in 2019, or will another team take the Great Lakes Crown this year?  Check out the Great Lakes Team Previews to see who might have what it takes to make it to Holly Springs in 2019.
